What do the NPK numbers on a fertiliser bag mean?
N (nitrogen) drives leaf growth, P (phosphorus) roots and flowering, K (potassium) stress and heat tolerance. In the UAE use a slow-release feed every 8–10 weeks from October to May, and cut feeding back sharply in peak summer — pushing new growth at 45 °C burns the plant.
Which pests show up most in Emirati gardens?
Red palm weevil (chewed holes and a fermented smell at the crown), mealybug (white cottony clusters), whitefly, red spider mite (fine webbing and silvery leaf speckling) and scale insects. Inspect weekly — horticultural oil or insecticidal soap solves most infestations if you catch them early, before any chemical spray is needed.
Which irrigation filter does my system need?
Screen filters (120 mesh) suit clean mains water; disc filters handle algae and organic matter; sand media filters are for well or treated-sewage-effluent water. Clean or backwash every 2–4 weeks. A pressure difference above 0.5 bar between inlet and outlet means the filter is blocked — the single most common cause of dry patches in a lawn.
When and how much should I water?
Water before sunrise or after sunset — midday irrigation loses up to 30% to evaporation. Deep and infrequent beats short and daily: it pulls roots downward. Yellowing leaves plus algae on the soil surface means over-watering; wilting at noon that recovers by evening is normal heat stress, not thirst.
What is the right mowing height?
Never remove more than one third of the blade in a single cut. Keep Paspalum and Bermuda lawns at 25–40 mm: taller grass shades the soil, holds moisture and crowds out weeds without any herbicide. Sharpen mower blades each season — a torn tip browns and invites disease.
Why do leaf edges go brown and crispy?
Usually salt build-up, not disease. Gulf irrigation water leaves salts behind as it evaporates. Leach the bed once a season with 15–20% extra water to push salts below the root zone. Soil EC above 4 dS/m damages most ornamental planting — a cheap meter reading tells you more than a guess.

Build guide: ground, drainage & hard surfaces

Most landscape failures are invisible on handover day and appear in year two. These are the layers that decide which way it goes.

What sits under paving?
A compacted sub-base of 150–200 mm crushed aggregate at 95% compaction or better, then a bedding layer. Skip it and the paving settles unevenly within one rainy season — relaying costs more than doing it once.
How much fall does a terrace need?
1–2% away from the building — about 1 cm per metre. It is invisible to the eye but it is the difference between a dry wall and rising damp. Every hard surface must drain somewhere you have actually chosen.
Why does concrete crack here?
The daily temperature swing in the UAE exceeds 20 °C, so slabs expand and contract every day. Expansion joints every 4–6 m give that movement somewhere to go. Without them the slab chooses its own crack line.
How deep should planting soil be?
300 mm for lawn, 600 mm for shrubs, 1,000 mm or more for trees, using low-salinity topsoil. Add a root barrier wherever a tree sits within 3 m of a pool shell, a wall footing or a drainage line.
What is the cheapest thing to get right early?
Empty sleeves. Run spare conduit under every hard surface before paving — future lighting, irrigation or a pool heater then costs an afternoon instead of breaking up finished stonework.

Pool guide: chemistry, filters & cleaning tools

Clear water is chemistry plus circulation, in that order. Keep these numbers in range and you will rarely need to shock a pool at all.

What chlorine and pH levels are correct?
Free chlorine 1–3 ppm and pH 7.2–7.6 for a residential pool. Above pH 7.8 chlorine loses more than half its killing power and the water turns cloudy; below 7.0 it corrodes grout, ladders and eyes. Test twice a week in summer, weekly in winter.
Why does chlorine disappear so fast in summer?
Unstabilised chlorine burns off in under two hours of Gulf sun. Cyanuric acid — the stabiliser — at 30–50 ppm protects it. But above 100 ppm it locks the chlorine up instead, and the only fix is partly draining and refilling.
Which numbers besides chlorine matter?
Total alkalinity 80–120 ppm keeps pH from bouncing; calcium hardness 200–400 ppm stops the water leaching calcium out of plaster and grout. High calcium leaves the white scale line at the waterline; low calcium eats the pool itself.
Sand, cartridge or DE filter?
Sand traps 20–40 microns and is backwashed when pressure rises 0.5–0.7 bar above clean. Cartridge traps 10–15 microns and is rinsed every 4–6 weeks. DE is the finest at 2–5 microns. Whichever you have, run a full turnover — 6–8 hours of filtration a day in UAE summer.
What cleaning tools does a pool actually need?
A leaf skimmer net daily, a wall brush weekly (nylon bristles for vinyl and fibreglass, stainless only on bare concrete), a manual vacuum or a robotic cleaner, a telescopic pole, and a test kit. Empty the skimmer and pump baskets every few days — a blocked basket starves the pump and burns the motor.
What should I do after a sandstorm?
Brush the walls and floor before vacuuming so the dust is suspended, run the filter continuously for 24 hours, then shock at night — daylight destroys the shock dose before it works. Check the filter pressure the next morning.
How do saltwater pools differ?
A salt cell makes chlorine from 3,000–4,000 ppm of dissolved salt, so you handle no chemicals weekly — but the chemistry rules are identical. Clean scale off the cell plates every 3–6 months, and watch TDS: more than 1,500 ppm above your fill water means it is time to dilute.

How do I judge artificial grass quality?
Look at Dtex (yarn thickness) and stitch density, not price per metre. Pile height 30–40 mm suits residential use; drainage should exceed 60 litres per m² per minute. A silica sand infill keeps the blades upright and stops the whole carpet creeping.
Does artificial grass need maintenance?
Yes — brush against the pile direction monthly to lift the blades, and rinse it down. Surface temperature can run 20 °C above air temperature in direct sun, so a hose-down before the children come out matters more than most people expect.
What IP rating do garden lights need?
IP65 for anything at ground level, IP68 for fittings submerged in a pool or fountain, and 12 V low-voltage wherever water is close. Choose 2700–3000 K colour temperature: cooler white makes planting look grey and dead at night.
Natural timber or composite decking?
Teak and ipe look best and need oiling every 6–12 months in this climate. WPC composite needs no oil and resists termites, but runs hotter underfoot in direct sun. Both need a ventilated gap beneath — trapped moisture is what actually destroys decking.
How should a BBQ area be laid out?
Keep at least 3 m clear of shrubs and fabric shade sails, use a non-combustible worktop (granite or quartz, not laminate), leave ventilation above the unit, and put a tap and a bin within arm’s reach — the two things every unused BBQ area is missing.
Why do planter boxes damage walls?
Because they are built without a membrane. A planter against a wall needs drainage holes, a 50 mm gravel layer and a waterproof membrane on the shared face. Otherwise irrigation water migrates into the structure and the damage shows up as blistering paint a year later.

Glass Rooms & Glass Majlis

A glass room is a climate problem before it is a design problem. Get the specification right and it is usable in August, not only in February.

Single or double glazing?
Double glazing with a 12–16 mm cavity cuts heat transfer by roughly half compared with single glass. In a UAE glass majlis that is not a comfort upgrade — it is the difference between a room you use and a room you close in May.
What does a Low-E coating do?
It reflects infrared while letting visible light through, bringing the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) down to about 0.25–0.35. You keep the daylight and the view and lose most of the heat — exactly the trade you want here.
Tempered or laminated glass?
Tempered is 4–5 times stronger and shatters into blunt granules. Laminated holds together on an interlayer, cuts noise and blocks around 99% of UV — so fabrics and timber inside do not fade. Many majlis projects use laminated on the sun side and tempered elsewhere.
How much cooling will it need?
Budget roughly one ton of cooling per 9–12 m² — about double a normal room of the same size. If the load looks impossible, insulate the roof rather than buying a bigger unit: the roof, not the glass, is usually the largest single heat source.
Why does the frame sweat?
Condensation forms where humid outside air meets a cold surface. An aluminium frame without a thermal break conducts the cold straight through and drips. Specify thermally broken profiles and the problem disappears — retrofitting them does not.
How is the glass kept clean?
Water with a neutral detergent and a rubber squeegee. Avoid ammonia cleaners and any metal blade — both scratch coatings permanently. Inspect the silicone and gaskets once a year; a failed seal fogs a double-glazed unit from the inside and cannot be cleaned.

Good to know: materials, spans & shade

A pergola is judged in July, not in January. Material, span and slat angle decide how much of the year you actually sit under it.

Aluminium, timber or WPC?
Aluminium is light, rust-free and lasts longest with almost no upkeep. Treated timber and teak look warmest but need oiling and are vulnerable to termites. WPC gives a timber look with far less maintenance. Galvanised steel is for long spans only.
Why does the finish fade so quickly?
Ordinary paint fails in two Gulf summers. Ask for powder coating at 60–80 micron with a UV-rated warranty, and marine grade if the site is near the coast — salt-laden air attacks a coating faster than sunlight does.
How far can it span without a column?
Aluminium handles 4–5 m clear. Beyond that you need a deeper beam or an extra column — and a supplier offering 7 m in a light section without either is selling you a sag in two years.
What slat angle gives the best shade?
Slats set at 30–45° facing south or west give 60–75% shade while still letting air move through — shade without airflow just traps heat. Motorised louvres let you change the angle through the day and close them against rain.
What height works best?
2.4–3 m. Lower traps hot air underneath; higher loses the shade entirely once the sun drops toward the horizon in late afternoon — exactly when the space is being used.
Which roof covering should I choose?
Polycarbonate blocks about 99% of UV while passing daylight, HDPE shade fabric breathes best and costs least, and insulated sandwich panels give full shade and rain cover. Match the covering to whether you want light, airflow or a proper outdoor room.
What holds it down in a storm?
Concrete pad footings of at least 400 × 400 × 400 mm per column, or chemical anchors into a sound slab. Seasonal shamal gusts reach 120 km/h — a pergola bolted only to paving becomes a sail.

Everything on a roof is a structural and a waterproofing decision first, and a planting decision second.

How much weight can the roof take?
Ask a structural engineer before drawing anything. An intensive roof garden can reach 300–500 kg/m² once saturated; a lightweight extensive scheme stays at 80–150 kg/m². Saturated weight, not dry weight, is the number that matters.
What protects the waterproofing?
A root barrier membrane laid over the waterproofing, plus a protection board. Flood-test the roof for 48 hours before a single layer goes on top — finding a leak afterwards means lifting the entire garden.
How does a roof garden drain?
A dimpled drainage board holds a little water and passes the rest, with a geotextile above it so soil never reaches the outlets. Keep every drain inspectable — a blocked outlet under 300 mm of substrate is invisible until the ceiling below stains.
Why not use ordinary garden soil?
Because it is heavy and it compacts. Engineered lightweight substrates using perlite, pumice and coir cut the weight 30–40% and keep air in the root zone, which is exactly what compaction destroys.
How does wind change the design?
Wind speed at upper levels runs 20–30% higher than at ground. Anchor planters and shade structures, keep planting low and broad-rooted, and avoid loose gravel near a parapet — anything that can move eventually will.
What irrigation works on a roof?
Drip on a timer with a rain sensor, zoned separately from the ground-level garden. Evaporation on an exposed roof is far higher, and a rooftop bed dries out in a fraction of the time the same planting would at ground level.
